Press Statement by Director, NZSIS

Friday 19 October 2007

Dr Warren Tucker, Director of the NZSIS, today confirmed that he regularly briefs Mr Key, in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition, on a range of intelligence and security matters affecting New Zealand. Such briefings are specifically required by the statute governing the activities of the NZSIS. The subjects of these briefings are necessarily confidential.

Dr Tucker also noted that the NZSIS has no powers to enforce security, such as arrest or detention, and that the much-publicised operations earlier this week are a Police matter.

There will be no further comment.
