Our work

New Zealand’s Security Threat Environment

Each year we publish our independent assessment of the threats of foreign interference, espionage, violent extremism and terrorism facing New Zealand.

About the report

The Security Threat Environment report is NZSIS’s annual, independent assessment of the national security threats facing New Zealand. It’s based on our own intelligence collection and analysis and covers threats including violent extremism, terrorism, foreign interference, espionage and insider threat.

Real life case studies are used to illustrate the types of concerning behaviours and activities we see, alongside protective security advice on how to manage these risks. New Zealanders can look at a case study and ask  ‘what might this threat look like in our community?’ or ‘what does this mean for our business or community?’.

Why we produce this report

NZSIS is committed to raising awareness about national security threats so that New Zealanders can be better prepared to manage those threats. The aim of the report is to create a starting point for more informed national security discussions on how to avoid or reduce harm.
